Patients Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing these medications must be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a intense return of appetite.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," described one woman.

This challenge is compounded if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
